Accelerate your learning curve with these 5 practical tips

Accelerate your learning curve with these 5 practical tipsAccelerate your learning curve with these 5 practical tipsHave you seen those articles with headlines that promise the impossible?1000X your personal growthChange your life in 10 secondsLearn EVERYTHING in 1 hourYou and I both know that these types of claims are BS - its leidhing more than cheap clickbait. But why are we still baited by these headlines? Were optimists And theres nothing wrong with that.Look, we all know that theres no such thing as 1,000% growth in a short period of time. We also know that we cant finish a 300-page book in 30 minutes. Mastery doesnt work that way. There are no shortcuts. However, getting good at something is also not totally unattainable. Because like these above extreme claims, there is a counterculture that says it takes 10,000 hours (or more) to master a skill. As you might expect, Im more on the side of that it takes longer to get good at something. But I firmly believe theres a difference i n the way we learn. You can spend 10,000 hours doing something and learn nothing.Thats why Im sharing 5 things that have worked for me in the past to accelerate my learning curve and learn skills faster.1. Use best practicesDont reinvent the wheel. Its a platitude you often hear. And yet, we all think were majestic wheel-inventors.When you start learning a skill, it must come from a place of humility and admiration for the practice.Whether its writing, value investing, or playing the pan flute start with the basics. I get that people want to be different and try to do new things. But no one ever started as an original. We start by doing what everybody else did. Once you master the basics, you can go out and do your own thing. When I started writing, I copied my favorite authors. And I followed advice from books like On Writing by Stephen King and Ernest Hemingway. Its the saatkorn with investing. I didnt try to create my own strategy from the beginning. I learned about investing from my mentors and from books. I didnt make decisions on my own. That only came later.By listening to best practices, you can avoid making mistakes in the beginning. And thats exactly why most people never get good at something. They quit too early.Dont be like most people. Instead, learn from the greats. And have respect for the skill youre learning.2. Measure and evaluate your progress weeklyYour goal is to get better at a skill, right? How do you know that youre getting better without measuring it?Measuring your progress is the only way you can evaluate it. You dont need hardcore data to evaluate. I use my journal as an evaluation tool.Every day, I write about what Ive learned. What mistakes I made. What I need to avoid. What I want to focus on.And every week, I review my journal and look at how it went. Did I spend enough time practicing? Did I make enough notes? What should I do differently?Looking for tips to get started with journaling? Read this.3. Get feedbackIts important to g et input from mentors, coaches, or experts whove done what were trying to do.I cant stress this enough. Show your progress to an experienced person.Play the guitar in front of a teacherSend your articles to an established writerDiscuss your business model with a successful entrepreneurIf you dont have access to an expert, consider paying someone. Getting feedback from a more experienced person is scary. Ive been there many times. We dont like to be told that were doing things wrong. We also dont like to look stupid. Thats normal. But whats more important. Your feelings or your career? Also, good mentors and coaches never make you feel bad. Remember If make you feel bad, youve asked the wrong person for advice.Seek out people who are already established and have nothing to prove. They will help you better.4. Dont quitThis is so obvious that it often gets left out. You cant master a skill if you quit early. Theres no point in talking about that. However, understanding WHY we quit can hel p us to prevent quitting early. So when youre learning a skill, your progress does not grow linearly over time. But we all expect that learning is linear. The more time I invest in something, the better I should get, right? Unfortunately, learning skills dont work that way. Our progress looks more like thisWe hit learning plateaus - and all of a sudden, we dont get better. But the harte nuss is that time does not stop, only our progress does - and thats very frustrating. And what does frustration cause?Thats right An urge to quit. So when you stop growing, know why you want to quit. The trick is to acknowledge the urge but not giving into it.Remember When you accelerate your learning curve, you will still hit plateaus (see drawing). The difference is that you expect them. That alone will help you to push through plateaus.5. Work harderYeah, but I work smart, dude There are always Einsteins who try to tell us that they work smart. Good for them. But thats not what Im talking about ( listen to my podcast episode about working hard if you want to hear more on this).Even if you work 2 hours a day. Im saying Work hard during those two hours. Every day, work hard. Dont hold anything back.I always thought I worked hard. But I wasnt working nearly as hard as I am today. And I can still improve a lot.As you and I both know, hard work is not about appearing busy or doing useless tasks. It has everything to do with focus.I know this sounds cheesy. When youre working work.Dont go for coffee 10 times a day, stop looking at your social media apps, and dont lounge in your chair. Dont wander around, thinking, what should I do now?If you want to learn faster, achieve more, and make a contribution, you must take your personal development seriously. You cant slack off. This is not high school.Im not always a fan of black/white thinking. But when it comes to getting good at what you do, it is indeed a binary choice Are you learning or NOT?Theres no middle ground. You either move forward, or you go backward. Its up to you.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDarius Foroux.

The Stuff Before Your Work History (It Matters)

The Stuff Before Your Work History (It Matters)The Stuff Before Your Work History (It Matters)Your address, name, phone number and other vitals are easy to figure out. And your workhistory section may take some finessing and fancy verbal maneuvering to become aseffective as you want it to be, but its still pretty much in front of you you had xposition with y organization. But the in-between stuff, that nebulous portion of theresume that includes qualifications and the ominous sounding career objective whatto do with that? Heres a guide to that vague area of self-description. Career ObjectiveCareer objectives tell readers exactly what kind of position youre looking for, make your intentions clear and set the tone for how the rest of the resume is evaluated. While some resumes are focused on set positions, many arent clearly focused on anyone job. A career objective will clarify any ambiguities. If you seek a part-time orfreelance position, this objective is a good way of making that c lear so that no confusionarises later. The career objective on the resume rephrases or restates intentions stated in the coverletter. However, the objective is useful because many people read over the resume beforelooking at the cover letter. Additionally, cover letters are sometimes separated fromtheir resumes, or at larger corporations, bedrngnis put into the resume scanner.Career objectives come in two types descriptive and titled. Descriptive job objectivesbriefly describe the type of job youre interested in. Titled job descriptions namethe job title. Descriptive career objectives work best when youre more interested inbeing seen as an overall candidate or if when applying to a company that has no specificpositions open. The career Objective sentence should be brief and no more than two lineslong. Do not permit your objective to ramble.Resume writers make their biggest mistakes writing descriptive job objectives bylisting a bunch of cliches such as a chance to apply my skills, an d achallenging opportunity or an opportunity for growth. These phrases havebeen used so many times that they dont even register with readers. The key is to behonest about what you really want in an unassuming and business-like fashion. Titled job objectives simply list the exact job title for which you are applying. Thiscomes in handy when you are applying to a large company that may have several positionsopen at once. Summary of QualificationsThis can also be called the Highlights section, but, besides sounding a bitgiddy, that title also implies that there are some lowlights not beingmentioned. Call it a summary of qualifications. This section allows you toshow off your achievements that set you apart from the sea of other applicants. Everythingyou hope your resume implies (those years of experience, the technical skills youveacquired, your proven leadership ability) can now be explicitly stated.Again, avoid the weak, cliche ridden resume language. Even if you are aself-motivated, goal-oriented, people person, state thesequalities so they sound like the truth and not like the pamphlet you read in your guidancecounselors waiting room. And only put concrete qualification for the job.Takes direction well is not a qualification but an opinion. The list for the Summary of Qualifications should contain a maximum of four statements. Each statement should be under two lines long, and bulleted in from the text. To furtheremphasize a list of points, simply indent the information another tab level right so thatit stands out despite the bulletsEducationThe education section is one of the few times you get to brag about your education tosomebody who doesnt share your bloodline

Why Self Care Is Critical For Working Moms to Succeed

Why Self Care Is Critical For Working Moms to SucceedWhy Self Care Is Critical For Working Moms to SucceedOf all the tips for working moms, the very top of the list has to be taking care of yourself. Moms needs often seem to come last. After your kids, their dad, your job, the pets, and endless errands, there is the one and only... you. Theres just not enough time in the day to get everything done, so your running shoes or novel or bath salts or strappy sandals just gather dust. But you cant always stay on the back burner. Here are four reasons its important for working moms to take care of ourselves If Mama Isnt Happy, Nobody Is When mom is stressed or burnt out, everyone in the house suffers. Even a baby gets fussy when his mother is upset. Older children may respond to a tense mom by acting out. If you take an hour or just ten minutes to do whatever makes you feel good the rest of your day will be easier and mora fun. Your family will enjoy having an energetic and refreshed mo m, even if they complain about your absence. The bottom line is by paying attention to your own needs, youll be better at meeting everyone elses. Stress and Sleep Deprivation Cause Weight Gain Stress and sleep deprivation releases cortisol into your bloodstream, which triggers fat storage around your waist. No wonder its so hard to lose that pregnancy weight while getting up every three hours with a new babyWho knew? Not only is it demoralizing to carry more weight than your ideal, but it also increases your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and arthritis, among other conditions. And we all want to live long enough to play with our grandkids, maybe even see them get married, right? So the next time youre tempted to stay up until midnight sorting, folding, and putting away everyones laundry, go to sleep. You can just dress the kids out of baskets of clean laundry. Similarly, taking your work lunch break to exercise can actually give you a burst of energy and mak es the afternoon more productive. Other People Are Capable, Too So many working moms fall into the superwoman trap, thinking we have to be in charge of everything because were the only one who will do it right. That mentality not only overloads you with work, but it also doesnt give enough credit to your other family members (aka your support system). Even worse, it prevents them from learning skills that can lighten your load and make them feel more capable. Try leaving the kids with their dad or grandfather for a Saturday morning while you have brunch with your girlfriends. He may not change the diapers as often as you would, or feed them perfectly balanced meals, but I bet theyll have fun. And not only will he feel rightly proud of his caregiving ability, but your children will also develop independence, seeing that theyre all right without mom hovering nearby all weekend. At work, see if theres a junior employee looking to advance.Perhaps theyll be interested in some work yo u can delegate to them. Again, they wont be completed the way you would do it, but youll have more free time for yourself. Youll also be mentoring someone who could use the experience. Life Is for Living This is your life, right now. Would you rather spend it rushing around to finish your to-do list, or actually enjoying yourself? Dont fall into the trap of thinking youll relax once you reach the bottom of the list there will always be something more to do. Instead, ruthlessly prioritize, eliminate tasks that dont absolutely have to get done and fight the disease to please everyone. If youre having trouble carving out time for yourself, start small. Say you always wanted to meditate wake up five minutes early for some deep breathing and visualization. Or if you miss exercising regularly, schedule a once-a-week power walk during lunch. If its on your calendar, you can plan work around it. And the next time you have some breathing space, dont fill it with errands. Instead, just b reathe. Edited by Elizabeth McGrory.

Audio Video Lights and Engineering ME Today November 2011 Engineering

Audio Video Lights and Engineering ME Today November 2011 Engineering Audio Video Lights and Engineering ME Today November 2011 Engineering Audio, Video, Lights and EngineeringElizabeth R. Schwartz, Systems Engineer and Project Manager, (Clair Brothers Audio Systems, Inc.) received her mechanical engineering degree from Duke University, and began her career in the audio, video, lighting (AVL) ordnungsprinzips integration industry. Doing exactly what she wants to do as a career, she completely believes in following your passion.Born and raised in Swaziland, Africa, Elizabeths parents were missionaries with Trans World Radio (TWR) where her interest in the AVL world began. My dad welches a broadcast engineer for TWR and my mom worked in the main offices and used her hintergrund and music skills in community ministries. Through their work, I was exposed to the TWR recording studios and transmitter site where I was first introduced to the audio side of the AVL world. In a recent interview , Elizabeth shares her hintergrund, experiences and takes us behind the scenes of the audio, video and lighting industry. As a mechanical engineer, how did you end up in the audio/video/lighting ordnungsprinzips integration field?Moving to the USA, I was able to take audio, video, acoustics and music related courses throughout high school and college. After graduation and moving to Oklahoma City, I had a strong interest in working for Ford Audio-Video Systems my first real job. They offered me a position as a draftsperson and after a year I was promoted to the position of project engineer in training. A year later, I was promoted to project engineer as the lead engineer on some of the companys largest projects. What were your expectations when you first began your engineering career?I expected that I would know a ritterlich amount about the work I would be doing at my first job. In reality, I knew very little and learned almost everything from on the job training and hands-on experien ce. However, having an engineering degree helped prepare me for thinking through and solving problems and managing the projects that I worked on.Tell us about your current employer Clair Brothers Audio Systems. Clair Brother Audio Systems, Inc. is a loudspeaker manufacturer and an audio, video and lighting (AVL) systems integration company. The speaker manufacturing side of the company konzepts, fabricates and builds various products including line arrays, video and audio stage monitors, full range speakers, subwoofers, rigging and road cases. The systems integration side of Clair Brothers provides various services for the installation of audio, video and lighting systems. unterstellung services include acoustical analysis and konzeption, building a system based on clients needs, creating specifications, budgets and drawings, installing, testing and commissioning of the system and service of existing systems.Clair Brothers works on systems for churches, sports arenas and stadiums, pe rforming arts centers, university facilities and cruise ships. Some of the Clair Brothers projects past and present are Watermark Community Church in Dallas, TX, the BC Place stadium renovation in Vancouver, BC, Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN, and the Marriott Waikiki Edition in Honolulu, HI.What does the company look for when they hire its employees? The work environment calls for someone who can work both independently and as part of a team. Depending on the position, some experience related to the work would be necessary. This could be an engineering or architectural background, an IT background, previous AVL experience, a background in theater or lighting, music or acoustics background or something related to broadcast or camera work or drafting and CAD experience. To do well in the job, you would need to have a genuine interest in the AVL industry and be willing to continually learn about the industry. Basic skills such as use of standard spreadsheet, word processing and email programs, good customer service and writing skills are also important.Working for a small company, as a systems engineer/project manager what does your role entail? I am involved from the design phase to the completion of a project. I can be involved with almost any aspect of the job, but the most frequent tasks include meeting with customers and other trades involved with the specific project, creating a system design and budget, putting together a bid for bid projects, creating drawings of systems, programming control systems and other devices that are required, creating GUIs (Graphical User Interface), testing and commissioning the system, writing user manuals and training the end user.Typically I will be involved with 10-15 projects throughout a year, but the amount of work can vary greatly depending on the phase of the project, whether it is a design project, bid or a complete installation project, and whether I am the lead on the project or assisting others on their proj ects.Starting out in the AVL field I learned the basics by assisting others with their projects and over time working on progressively larger and complex projects of my own. I was able to be successful because I was always willing to take on challenging projects. With the ever-changing technologies involved in AVL projects it is common to be the first to use certain devices or to be the first to use devices in a certain application. When dealing with these challenges I have learned to be persistent in researching the problems and in working with manufacturers to find a solution. There are also coworkers and others mora experienced in the field that are willing to help and give advice when asked. Successful projects have been the result of being organized, using methodical processes to accomplish tasks and working with a team of talented people who also want projects to be successful.Tell us about one engineering achievement that you are most proud of I have many memorable moments fr om almost all of the projects I have worked on. Some of the largest projects were hotel casinos in Las Vegas, the Mandarin Oriental and Veer Towers, both at City Center, and the Wynn Encore. I also worked on the AVL systems for the Southern Nevada Water Authority which was a part of the new construction of Molasky Corporate Center. This was the first LEED Green Building project that I worked on and it was interesting to learn more about the sustainability and environmental requirements for the building.Citizens Business Bank Arena (Ontario, California) during the OKC Thunder - LA Lakers gameAs part of the project at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, I was able to attend the first basketball game between the LA Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder which was my new hometown team at the time. Being able to see the systems fully functional and working after months or years of time invested in the project is my favorite part of being an AVL Systems Engineer/Project Ma nager, no matter if it is a small project or a large multimillion dollar project. The AVL industry has a big impact on the world today. It plays a role in emergency situations with audio and visual paging and other notification systems. Communication is changing with the access to video and teleconferencing systems. Churches and other venues are using broadcast quality equipment to record, stream and replay their services and events. Its difficult to go anywhere today without seeing some form of digital signage whether it is for advertising or informational purposes. With the current generation growing up carrying around miniature computers and media centers in their pockets, there will be a growing demand for high quality audio, video and lighting systems in businesses and homes.Tell us how mechanical engineering technology fits into the world of audio/video systems integration. The study of acoustics, noise and vibration are often part of the mechanical engineering curriculum and t hese subjects are important to the AVL industry. The topics of statics and dynamics are essential in developing proper structural mounting and rigging methods for AVL equipment. When working with equipment racks and other heat-producing AVL devices, it is necessary to take heating, cooling and fluid dynamics into consideration. One of the major applications of nanotechnology being studied and researched is for the touch screen market. The basic principles of sound and light that are the foundation of the AVL industry follow are the same principles of physics studied in mechanical engineering.Walk us through the design/engineering/programming /installation processThe majority of my work revolves around particular projects. Most of our projects can be split into two categories, design-build and bid. For design-build projects, we work with a customer from designing the system all the way through to the completed installation. Bid projects are typically large projects that involve an ar chitect, multiple contractors and consultants. Bid projects start with making a bid on an already designed system and, after winning the contract, continuing through to the completed installation. My earliest involvement with a project is usually during the design phase. The design phase includes meeting with the customer and other stakeholders in the project, determining the requirements and constraints of the design and developing the system components based on this information. As with many aspects of the technology field, the audio, video and lighting field and related technology is constantly changing. A big part of being ready to create a design that fits a clients needs is keeping up with the latest technology and watching the latest trends. There are hundreds of manufacturers of various equipment used in our systems, and the design phase requires that we take all the components available, choose the best to match the requirements and integrate them together to form a working system that fits the clients needs and budget.Once the budgets have been determined and agreed upon, the project moves on to the engineering phase. During the engineering phase, all of the planning and preparation needed for the installation is completed. One of the most important aspects of the engineering phase is the creation of installation drawings that are usually created in AutoCAD or other drafting/design software. These drawings include system one-line schematics, panel and rack details, architectural placement and location drawings, conduit and other electrical requirements and mounting details. For many projects it is necessary to work with a licensed structural engineer to have mounting and rigging details approved and stamped. One of the latest trends is for AVL systems to be included in Revit 3D architectural building models. Many of the devices used in AVL systems require some kind of programming in order to function. This programming is typically manufacturer specific so there is a large variety of software and programming languages that have to be learned. Most audio systems include a digital signal processor (DSP) that allows for audio processing to be digitally created. What once may have been done by several individual devices in the past can now be done by one DSP system. For this part of the engineering phase a layout has to be configured through the specific DSP software that takes the physical connections to the DSP and digitally directs the signals through routers, mixers, equalizers, compressors and various other processors depending on the requirements of the system. There is often also control system programming required in AVL systems. This programming is also specific to the manufacturers that build the control system devices and can be logic based processing, code similar to C$ or a graphical type of programming. Control systems allow the end user to control the AVL system through a touch panel, keypad or some other user interface . A control system can take a large system that includes speakers, video displays, various audio and video sources and processors, drapes or screens, lighting, temperature controls, occupancy sensors, and combines the control for the entire system to one user interface. An important part of control system programming that occurs in the engineering phase is the user interface design. These designs can be created in the manufacturer provided software, but a sleek and modern design usually involves graphics design in Photoshop or other graphics software. During the engineering phase, the equipment is ordered and anything to be installed in equipment racks or lecterns is assembled, programmed and tested out in our in-house assembly area. The next phase of a project is the installation phase. There is usually some overlap between the phases as engineering will be ongoing as the installation begins. During the installation phase an installation team will pull all the wire and cabling at th e project site. All of the wiring will be terminated at panels, junction boxes or other destinations. The installation team will install of the rigging, speakers, lighting, projectors and other video displays, equipment racks and other AVL equipment. Once this is complete, all of the system has to be tested and commissioned. Testing includes verifying that all of the system cabling and terminations are correct and conform to certain specifications. It also includes testing of any programming that was done to ensure it works as expected. All equipment is tested to make sure that it is functioning properly and there are no manufacturer defects. Commissioning of an AVL system goes beyond just verifying the functionality of the system but ensuring that it looks and sounds good. This includes setting up the system so that it meets certain standards and achieves the expected quality and setting up any user required default settings. The final phase is project close-out. This may include an y punch list items left to complete, finishing the as-built drawings and turning them over to the customer, writing user manuals and putting together product manuals, training the end users and in some cases attending the first use of the system. Systems also include warranties and extended service contracts so there will often be continued interaction with the customer and their system to ensure the system works as expected for many years after the installation.Based on your experiences, define innovation in your own words?Seeing a need and being able to create the solution for it, sometimes even before the need is realized. This is true for many of the greatest innovations of our time, cell phones, tablet PCs, LED technology and some of the work in the AVL sector such as Audio Video Bridging (AVB) that will allow for audio and video device networking. What advice would you offer other early-career engineers looking for a job in todays economy and those in the first few years of wor k? One of my college internships was working at the Mt. Olive Pickle Company. Although the company was not hiring engineers as it only had a 2-person engineering department they were willing to take me on as an engineering intern. I was able to learn the Inventor and AutoCAD software and gain valuable practical experience. In todays world, engineers are in high demand. The possibilities for engineers are all around, whether it is in a jar of pickles or the sound system at your favorite sporting event.

May 20, 2016 - Last month, 10 hardware innovators presented their prototypes and pitched their concepts at the 2016 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) in India. Three start-up companies - Adiuvo Diagnostics Private Ltd., Bempu Health and Chakr Innovation - were named the winners of the event, which welches the first of three ASME ISHOWs being held this spring.Adiuvo Diagnostics, a company that launched just five months ago, was one of the winners of the competition, which was held April 28 at the Le Meridien Hotel in Bengaluru. Adiuvos winning entry, the Dermascope, is a hand-held instrument that uses light waves to detect and monitor skin diseases non-invasively. A second medica l start-up, Bempu Health, was also named a winner for its entry, the Bempu Hypothermia Alert Device, a baby bracelet that detects neonatal hypothermia and sends audio and visual alerts to mothers. Chakr Innovation was selected as the third winner for its product, inC, a system that collects exhaust from diesel engines and converts soot into ink and other products for the textile industry. (Left to right) Bala Pesala and Geethanjali Radhakrishnan from Adiuvo Diagnostics, with ASME Foundation Executive Director Noha El-Ghobashy.The three companies shared $50,000 in prize money, which the businesses can use to further develop their products and bring them to market. Arpit Dhupar of Chakr Innovations, the developer of inC, noted that the prize money couldnt have come at a better time. During the RD process, we exhausted all of our resources, he said. If it were not for ISHOW, it would be very difficult to face the coming month. Im really happy this happened at the right time. We were a lmost at a zero balance. The money will also help Bempu Health widen the availability its hypothermia bracelet in India, according to Ratul Narain, a mechanical engineer and the companys founder. The device is currently in use at 150 medical centers in 11 Indian states. Narain said the prize would help accelerate pilot projects in two additional states, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Our whole team is focused on getting this to as many babies as we can, as quickly as possible, especially before the monsoon and winter season, which is when many babies suffer from hypothermia and infection, he said. Ratul Narain, founder of Bempu Health, and Virginia Morgan, Bempu Healths head of public health impact and partnerships, are joined by the ASME Foundations Noha El-Ghobashy at the 2016 ISHOW India in Bengaluru. Geethanjali Radhakrishnan, a biomedical engineer who began designing the Dermascope only four months before the ISHOW India took place, knew exactly how she would start spending he r winnings. I am going to order more LEDs for my project, she said. They are really expensive. Im sure this funding is going to help me a lot. The first thing I am going to do is contact my LED dealer in China. In addition to seed money for product development, the ISHOW winners also receive extensive design and engineering reviews of their products by a panel of industry experts - a prize that may be even more valuable than money. Radhakrishnan said she was particularly looking forward to this feature of the ISHOW. My device definitely needs a better design and help taking my device to the market, she said. And now I know that I will have a lot of assistance from ISHOW people, and ASME. There will be mentors who can guide me through this process. Noha El-Ghobashy, ASME Foundation executive director (right), presents Arpit Dhupar, chief technical officer for Chakr Innovations, with his award at ISHOW India. Two additional ISHOWs are scheduled to take place this spring. A Recruiters Guide to Sourcing in a Tough Candidate Market - Spark Hire

A Recruiters Guide to Sourcing in a Tough Candidate Market - Spark HireRecruiting in a tough candidate market can be quite the challenge for any recruiter. After youve exhausted your database, weeded through hundreds of resumes sent in via your posting, and sourced the job boards dry, its time to reevaluate and start thinking about what you havent done.Reach out to the Friendlies If you havent already done so, go back through your database in search of candidates with the skill set you are looking for who you have placed recently. Give ansicht people a call as these are the friendlies when it comes to understanding your value in the job search. These people are more likely to send referrals your way and these referrals are likely to be of similar caliber to the placed candidate simply by association.Take a look at your online and personal connections. Reach out to the people you have good relationships with and ask for referrals. The more people you talk to, the greater your chances of receiving the right referral.Advertise in the right placesWhere are you advertising? If posting a job description online is as far as your advertisement strategy goes, then its well past time to step it up a notch or two.Make sure that you are advertising frequently across all social media platforms. Join groups on LinkedIn and Facebook, tag the right people in your tweets, and you will see an increase in candidate traffic. If you are advertising in the right places, you are likely to receive leads on the skilled candidates you are looking for.Cold Call CompetitorsWhen all newer strategies fail, its time to resort to the tried and true recruiting strategy of cold calling. I know, I know calling sounds soCOLD Lets face it. There are little to no recruiters who genuinely enjoy cold calling into companies. But trust me, it can still work in todays recruitingUse programs such as Zoom Info, Hoovers, or even LinkedIn to help you identify talent within your clients competitor companies. Once you have a phone number to the company, call in and fight your way towards being transferred to the right persons extension.Today, many companies have forgone having an actual gatekeeper. Instead, they have automated systems which have become our savior when cold calling. Rather than having to invent a creative excuse to get the protective gatekeeper to transfer you, now you just simply type in the first 3 letters of a persons name to get their extension. What do you do when faced with a tough candidate market? Please share your tips in the comments below.Image Bernie123/BigStock.com

How to give a pep talk that actually works

How to give a pep talk that actually worksHow to give a pep talk that actually worksWeve all been on the receiving end of an unconvincing pep talk. The speakers heart is clearly in the right place, peppering us with positive messages of Youll get through this and Dont worry, everything is going to be alright But we remained unconvinced. To get us to actually believe in the encouragement we are hearing, vague compliments and stern motivations are leid enough, a new study published in theJournal of Experimental Psychology Human Perception and Performance suggests. They found that an autonomy supportive approach, which emphasizes psychological freedom and self-initiation, works better at motivating us than controlling, pressuring motivation. The tough love of you must get through this is not going to get through as loudly as I know that you have the tools to get through this difficult time, because I have seen your resourcefulness firsthand. What a good pep talk sounds likeThe researchers found that by emphasizing perceived choice and lower perceived pressure, the autonomy-supportive pep talks helped people feel close to one another and like they had more choices with their situation. We do not feel motivated by hearing everything is going to be alright, but we do feel motivated when someone reminds us that our fate is in our hands. When someone is undergoing a work crisis, the platitude of everything will be alright may not even be true. What can feel true is being reminded of your resilience to handle whatever comes your way.You cannot predict someones future, but you can give hope and solace to prepare for its uncertainty. This approach follows what psychotherapists and career experts already recommend for pep talks avoid cliches and affirm the persons strengths. You want the person to feel like you are actually listening to them. That starts with personalizing your motivational pep talk beyond broad cliches of time heals all wounds. The best pep talk is reminding so meone what they already know about themselves, based on your knowledge of them, William J. Doherty, a family social science professor, recommends. Also, recognize that a pep talk does not have to be all about you talking. Sometimes, the best pep talk is the brief uh-huh, uh-huh, I hear you of listening and being present for what someone has to get off their chest.

Important Things to Consider About Hiring Overqualified Workers

Important Things to Consider About Hiring Overqualified WorkersImportant Things to Consider About Hiring Overqualified WorkersGenerally, when someone is labeled as overqualified, it means they have a mora extensive and more impressive resume than the hiring manager expected. Regardless of their ability and willingness to do the job, they frequently are screened out by HR and the hiring manager never sees the resume. That is unfortunate for a variety of reasons.HR may notlage know how much additional qualification is acceptable so they rule out everyone beyond the minimum requirements the hiring manager set.Individuals with more than the required qualifications never have an opportunity to demonstrate that they are the best candidate. The hiring manager spends time training and developing a less qualified person and passing up someone who could have done the job well almost from day one.Why Is An Overqualified Worker a Bad Thing? Some managers are reluctant to hire overqualified workers for many reasons. Some are valid is some cases. Some are not.Too expensiveThis is the most common reason given for not hiring overqualified workers. In some cases, this is valid. In most cases, it is not. If the company posts the salary (or salary range) for a position, it is appropriate to assume that anyone who applies for the position is willing to do the work for that salary. Yes, a more experienced worker may ask for a higher salary because they know how much more they can contribute, but if thats the best salary you can offer, they will do the job for that salary and do it well. Hard to trainMany managers, especially new ones, worry that if they hire someone more experienced, that person will want to do things their own way rather than the way the manager wants. It is a question you need to get an answer from the candidate for, but that should be during the interview process, not used as a screening tool. If they want to do things their way, dump them and move on to the next candidate. However, if they say they can suggest things based on their experience but are certainly willing to follow company procedures, you have the best of both worlds. You may get a better way from them and, if not, they will do it your way anyway.Skills not currentAgain, this is something the manager should ask about in the interview process, not something to use as a screening tool. If anything, an overqualified worker probably has better skills because they have broader skills, both technically and interpersonally. You can teach them any new techniques they need to do the job and you can take advantage of their greater ability to multi-task and to get more done because of their ability to work across functional boundaries. Will be boredThis may seem like a broken record, but rather than using this possibility as an artificial reason to screen out an overqualified worker, this is something the manager should ask about during the interview. And as you will see in the Overqualifi ed Worker Grid below, sometimes bored is a good thing. Will leave when things improveYes, they may leave when things improve, but so will other workers. It is up to you as the manager to make them feel appreciated and motivated so they and their knowledgewill stay with you after things turn around. An overqualified worker may actually be a more stable, long-term choice.Fit This Into a Decision MatrixThe grid at the bottom of this page compares a managers skills against workers motivation. This simple four-square matrix can help you decide whether to hire an overqualified worker. Remember that in bestellung to hire the best candidate you will need to get some of these overqualified workers past HRs screening, but with an understanding of this matrix you will be able to do that. While this grid is shown as two types on each axis, there is actually a range from one side to the other.Overqualified Worker TypesWhat type of an employee the overqualified worker is will only come out during the interview process. The manager must ask the right questions and carefully listen for the answers. Some employees take a job only as a means to the next job. These people are continually driven for more. Most employees, however, are just happy in their job. They would be happy to take a promotion if it came along, but they arent going to push anyone out of the way to get it.Underqualified ManagersThe biggest obstacle to hiring overqualified workers is under-qualified managers- someone who got promoted beyond their skill level and just tries to hide. They dont want to make mistakes or to be noticed. They dont want anyone in their team to do anything because it might reflect badly on the manager. These managers dont stop to consider that something done well by their team reflects well on them. They are too busy protecting their own job. These are the managers who hope HR screens out the overqualified workers because theyre scared of them.Good managers, however, welcome overqualified workers. They know that in reservierung to get promoted, they have to have someone ready to take over their job. These managers welcome overqualified workers because they know these employees will make them look good and are a stepping stone to their own promotion.Good managers also know that to get promoted, their team must produce beyond expectations. An overqualified worker, even if only for a year or two, can make major contributions both in terms of personal output and of mentoring other employees in the group. The Bottom LineGood managers hire the best workers they can afford. They arent afraid of workers who might be older, smarter, or more experienced. They manage the skills of their employees to help the team produce at its best level. Thats what gets managers promoted. Be manager RER, not BLP, and you will go far.Overqualified WorkerDecision MatrixManagerManagerManager wants to be promotedManager protecting own jobEmployeeEmployee wants promotionA - Hire OverqualifiedB - D ont hire overqualifiedEmployeeEmployee happy in the jobC - Hire OverqualifiedD - Hire Overqualified
